1. Cleaning Supplies

Be prepared with the essential cleaning supplies like:

•  A brass wire brush
• Small pail to hold hot water
• Dish soap
• Venturi brush
• A 1/16” drill bit
• Replacement grease cups
• spatula
• stainless steel cleaner
• fine sandpaper

2. Start Scrubbing!

Starting with the burners, you need to detach them, and give them a good scrub. You need to pass a venturi brush through the burners to snag out any blockages, then brush the tops of the burners using a brass wire brush. If some are closed with food particles you can use a 1/16” drill bit to open them.

For the outside of the grill, use hot soapy water on the cast iron base and sides of the grill and to remove grease splatters.  For stainless steel lids, a stainless steel cleaner should be used to remove any discoloring. Once the paint is dried, brush the cast aluminum with a little olive oil, this helps restore the luster and prevent oxidation.

Lastly, use a spatula to scrape grease from the inside of the base all the way down towards the drip pan. Remove the drip pan and give it a good washing and be sure to replace the tin foil grease catcher

3. Inspect all hoses and feed tubes

Visually inspect all hoses and feed tubes on your grill. Look for any crimps, scratching and or punctures; if you detect any of these, it is time to replace the hoses.

4. Do a complete leak test of your grill

Very important that a leak test is done every year, especially after the grill has been in storage for a prolonged length of time. 5. Check all ignition parts

Now that your grill is clean and safe, it is time to check out how it lights. For battery ignitions it is a good idea to replace the batteries with new ones. Check all electrode leads and ensure the tips of the electrodes are clean and have no grease or rust build up on them; if they do, you can use sandpaper to clean them.

• During use always keep outdoor grills away from the walls of buildings and from under low hanging tree branches.
• Do NOT use outdoor grills inside a garage or other outdoor building.
• Grills should be used in an area that is level like a patio or designated lawn space.
• When grilling on a wooden deck or structure a piece of metal or a fireproof patio/deck protector should be placed under the grill. If the deck is attached to a building, the grill must be positioned as far away from the walls of the building as possible. Rings or kettles designed for wood burning (onto which a cooking grate could be placed) should never be used on a deck.
• When using a charcoal grill DO NOT add starter fluid to coals that are already hot.
• When engaging the automatic ignition on a gas grill the burners should not be lit when the hood is closed. The build up of gas that can occur within the confines of the closed hood prior to igniting the burners may cause an explosion once the burners are lit.
• DO NOT use outdoor grills in extremely windy conditions.
• NEVER leave an outdoor grill unattended. Children and pets should always be kept away from the grilling area.
• DO NOT USE  treated wood, such as scraps of pressure treated lumber left over from an exterior building project, as fuel for a fire meant for grilling.
• Always keep a fire extinguisher or water source nearby when grilling.
