How Does Water Affect My Chimney’s Masonry & Metal Components?

Brickwork is strong, durable, and notorious for being resistant to just about anything (it’s the only thing that worked for the 3 little pigs, after all). Because of this, many are surprised to learn that water is one of the most damaging elements your masonry chimney can face. In fact, whether your chimney is made of brick, stone, or metal, ongoing exposure to rain, snow, and humidity can lead to serious problems over time.

How is water harmful to chimneys?

  • Your brickwork is porous. Masonry materials are naturally porous, which is why investing in protective sealants (professional waterproofing) is so important. Rainwater and moisture can slowly wash away the mortar joints between bricks or stones, which weakens the structure and may cause bricks to loosen or fall out.
  • Freeze/thaw damage can wreak havoc. Like we said, masonry materials can absorb water. And when temperatures drop, that water freezes and expands, causing bricks and mortar to crack or break apart (a process called spalling). This can happen multiple times over a winter season.
  • Metal components can rust. Your chimney contains several important metal parts, and each one can be affected by moisture. Flashing (the metal barrier where the chimney meets the roof), your chimney cap, your chase cover (if you have one), and the system’s damper and firebox components can rust if not properly protected.

What’s even more concerning is that, if water gets past the chimney exterior, it can leak into your home, causing ceiling stains, wall damage, wood rot, or even mold growth around the fireplace.

Remember that your chimney is constantly exposed to the weather…and if it’s not properly protected, moisture can work its way into every part of the structure. Fortunately, we offer leak prevention services near you, ensuring quality protection for years to come.

What’s the Best Way to Prevent Chimney Leak Damage?

So, now you know how damaging water can be. How do you prevent chimney water damage from the get-go? It starts with proactive maintenance and, possibly, a few key upgrades. Here are the most effective ways to protect your chimney:

  • Install or replace your chimney cap. A chimney cap acts like an umbrella for your flue – it’s one of the most affordable ways to offer a lot of protection. In fact, in addition to keeping out rain and snow, it also blocks debris and animals from entering. Stainless steel or copper chimney caps are durable and rust-resistant, so invest in something solid for lasting protection.
  • Invest in chimney waterproofing. Professional-grade vapor-permeable waterproofing sealants (don’t go with store-bought) allow the moisture inside the brick to escape, while preventing new water from soaking in. This is one of the most effective long-term solutions for masonry protection.
  • Have the flashing inspected and maintained. Proper flashing in the area where the chimney meets the roof is a must. Over time, flashing can shift, crack, or rust, but an annual inspection will catch problems before they lead to leaks.
  • Have damaged mortar joints repaired. If the mortar between your bricks is cracked or crumbling, professional tuckpointing (replacing the old mortar with fresh) will restore your chimney’s strength and help to seal out water. This also helps prevent loose bricks and future structural damage.
  • Keep the crown in tip-top shape. The crown is the concrete top of your chimney. It directs water away from the sides of the flue and your chimney’s brickwork. But if it’s cracked or broken, water can easily get in. Old mortar chimneys will need to be rebuilt, while newer systems can often be repaired.

And, of course, don’t neglect your annual chimney inspections! An annual inspection by a certified chimney professional can help ensure small issues are caught before they become expensive repairs or spread to other areas of the home.

We’re a Clarksville Chimney Sweep You Can Trust

If you’re traveling north of Louisville, KY, you’ll come across Clarksville, IN. Clarksville is recognized as the oldest American town in the former Northwest Territory, and is where Meriwether Lewis met William Clark to plan their historic expedition to the Pacific Northwest.

And jumping to more modern historical facts, Clarksville is also where popular restaurant chain Texas Roadhouse first opened its doors – this location still operates today at the Green Tree Mall.

Other popular attractions in the area include Falls of the Ohio State Park, home to the world’s largest exposed Devonian fossil beds, and Colgate Clock, one of the largest clocks in the world, standing at 40 feet in diameter. And don’t miss out on a day at Lapping Park! Spanning 332 acres, this spot has hiking trails, sports fields, a disc golf course, and an amphitheater – a great hub for outdoor fun.

Whether you’re exploring ancient fossil beds, enjoying some local sights, or hiking scenic trails, Clarksville has a lot to offer – and it doesn’t stop with that!
