Why Isn’t My Gas Fireplace Pilot Light Working?

If your gas fireplace’s pilot light won’t stay lit – or won’t light at all – you’re not alone. This is a common issue, especially as the weather cools and people start using their fireplaces after a long break. Here are the most likely culprits:

  • Your pilot opening is dirty or clogged. Over time, dust, soot, and even spider webs can block the tiny opening where the gas comes out. A quick (and gentle) cleaning is usually all it takes to fix this.
  • The thermocouple or thermopile is faulty. These components act like safety sensors, detecting when the pilot flame is lit, then allowing the gas to flow to the main burner. If the thermocouple (or thermopile in newer units) is worn out or dirty, it won’t register correctly – in which case, a replacement may be needed.
  • You’re experiencing gas supply issues. If the gas valve is partially closed or the gas line is disrupted, your pilot won’t light. Make sure your gas shutoff valve is fully open, or if you use propane, check to make sure your tank isn’t empty.
  • You have air in the gas line. If your fireplace hasn’t been used in a while, air may have built up in the gas line. You may need to hold down the pilot button longer to clear the air and allow gas to reach the igniter.
  • Your pilot button or igniter is malfunctioning. If the igniter is faulty or the pilot button is stuck or worn out, the system can’t spark the gas. A technician can test and replace these components as needed.
  • Your fireplace or flue is drafty. If your fireplace is in a drafty area or exposed to outside winds, the pilot flame may be blowing out. You may need a new chimney cap installed.

Remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when trying to relight the pilot. And, if the problem persists, don’t attempt further repairs without professional insight – call in a certified technician to look things over, as DIY troubleshooting can lead to further damage if not addressed correctly.

What’s the Difference Between Fireplaces, Inserts & Stoves?

If you’re adding a new heating system to your home, you want to make sure you get it right – it’s a big investment, and realizing you made the wrong choice after everything is installed is disheartening. So, which is right for you – a fireplace, insert, or stove?

  • Fireplaces are great for those starting from scratch. Gas, wood, or pellet systems will need to be built into the wall and vented through a flue or chimney, or if you have an electric option, they can be simply plugged in. The downside of traditional fireplaces is that they’re typically less energy efficient than inserts or stoves (although modern options are known for providing solid heat).
  • Fireplace inserts are suitable for those with a fireplace system already in place. If you’re looking to convert an open wood fireplace to gas, for instance, adding a gas insert is a solid route to take. Inserts are self-contained units designed to slide (or be inserted, hence the name) into an existing fireplace.
  • Stoves are independent heating units that can be placed almost anywhere in a home, as long as you have a spot in your wall or ceiling to run a new vent system through. They can run on wood, gas, pellets, or electricity, and they offer excellent heat output. They also offer a great “classic” ambiance.

Do you already have a working fireplace, or are you starting from scratch? If you have a fireplace, an insert is a great upgrade. If starting from scratch, a stove or new fireplace may be the better route.
